No section of the Thayatal valley better illustrates the unique character of this landscape than the meander cutoff between Hardegg and Merkersdorf. Under the guidance of national park rangers, you will follow the Thaya river on its way through the valley on the Austrian-Czech border.
The river leads visitors through primeval forests, along colourful meadows and past steep rock formations. At the narrow point of the meander cutoff, you leave the Thaya behind just to be able to look at it again from above after a short ascent. Many guests are puzzled by the course of the river loops and the close interlocking of Austria and the Czech Republic. The ruins of Neuhäusl on the narrow points of the Czech meander cutoff on the opposite side also spring up surprises in the course of the hike.
